Different tubes can cause interesting harmonics in the power output section. However, I find guitar amp tone best addressed in the preamp section. Reviewing guitar amp schematics, I find one circuit most interesting, not used much in guitar amps & sonically superior to many of us musicians. Same circuit in some Bogen amps that get raving reviews when converted to a guitar amp.Place the first volume control at the 12AX7 output, not input. That is, use the first section of the 12AX7 driving the second 12AX7 section. Then use a capacitor from the second 12AX7 plate to a 500K pot. Ground the other side & use the wiper as the output to the next stage. Mild overdrive sonics exist throughout the volume range & most aggressive with 'hot' pickups. Use your guitar volume pot to adjust the mild overdrive. Another feature is less components in the first preamp grid input makes for a more quiet preamp section in most cases.
I like EL84s and those tubes sound 'chimey' plus do not have to have a reverb to sound cool.
On the other hand, a clean Fender sound uses the normal input design & either 6L6GC or 6V6GT power tubes. I find the 6L6 & 6V6 tubes to have a glassey & sparkle type sound. The ultimate Fender amp per our ears is a Fender Showman black face with 4x RCA black plate 6L6GCs - ya man!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this helps.
