Inject an audio signal into your power supply......

Look at the output of the device in question (power, pre, CD, whatever)on a scope or just hook it up to speakers. If there is any signal present at the output, the power supply can be improved.
You can also try varying the AC line voltage input over a reasonable range, say +/- 5%, and see if you have any B+ variation.

I've just built a couple of Allen Wright's shunt regulators (with AD797 op amps) and the performence is superb. Allen shares his knowledge at reasonable cost. Buy the preamp cookbook. Worth every penny.
In a preamp, without the shunt regualtor, I had 14mV of ripple to the amplifying circuitry. Adding the regualtor reduced the ripple to 0.42mV. Noise on the power supply terminals is effectively short circuited to ground.

Other elements are improtant as well, but you need to read Allen's book, Morgan Jones', and Tube Cad Journal for starters.
