I usually do search first but for some questions it's hard to figure out which key words will get you an answer. For instance, I easily found a thread explaining how to figure out the primary impedance. I then searched for over two hours and couldn't find anything about how to determine whether an unknown transformer is designed for SE or PP. I know SE has an air gap but there are hundreds of posts about transformers, air gaps, SE and PP but I saw nothing that discussed any method of testing, electrically or visually, to determine whether a transformer is one or the other. Usually I don't mind spending a while searching because in the process of not immediately finding the answer I end up reading a lot of interesting and useful information. There are other times though that one doesn't really want to spend two hours on a wild goose chase and really appreciates someone knowledgeable who will take a few minutes to transmit some of that knowledge. If anyone can impart that knowledge or clue me in to the magic search words that will make such an answer appear, I would be most appreciative. . . . . Charlie
