My 6B4G ST70 has been having problems of late, with one channel fading out, but not completely, or making popping noise. I'd tried switching tubes but it stayed with the one side. This has been going on for a few months off and on.The last few days I couldn't make it stop so I finally broke down and opened it up. I was all set to start swapping the driver board signal wire to the power tubes from one side to the other for diagnostics, but I thought I should just try resoldering the tube sockets onto the PC board. It's been working perfectly since.
I guess all that tube swapping I do on the driver board, plus pulling them to work on it when I did the conversion just weakens the joints, especially since the sockets are mounted on flexy pc board. Solder isn't meant to be stressed that much.
After the summer I need a new project. All my electronic tools/part were covered with cobwebs. My bike tools otoh are getting a good workout.
