Hi Andy,For this example 400 Ohms is correct. Total current is 122.5mA, so 50V drop divided by 122.5mA is 408 Ohms. In this case, 100mA goes to the load, 22.5mA down the VR tube.
This only works for stages which draw a reasonably constant current from the PSU, such as a PP or differential amp. If the 100mA load was disconnected, all the current (122mA) would pass though the VR tube, destroying it in short order.
For SE stages, the current drawn from the PSU varies substantially, and the 40mA rating must accomodate all the current swing drawn by the load.
