Good points, Charles.

My Otari MX 5050 II jumps through all those hoops,btw. It has the selection switch on the head block, (I wonder if it's related to the Technics?), and (Internally. Duh.), switchable speed ranges. Low= 3.75/7.5ips and high= 7.5/15 ips. I only have 7" pre-recorded 7.5ips tapes so far, and I've heard them only through headphones because I haven't purchased XLR or 1/4" plug to RCA adapters yet and can't send the output anywhere else yet.

I really need to get some big reels (or settle for a short test) and do some live to 2 track 15 ips recordings.

Are the heads in great shape? Is it optimally aligned? Search me. I'll have a better sense of it when I get past the headphone stage.
