Question on tape cleaning machine

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

I just received, out of the blue a KYBE tape cleaning machine. It is designed for 10" reels of computer tape and it has the tape feed through a series of what looks like paper (looks to be rolls of Kim Wipes,lab grade cleaning tissue).
Does any one have experience with this kind of machine: looks obviously well built. It also feeds the tape through a radioactive device: 400uC of polonium. Any idea what it is there for?
