rigel,I'm new to R2R.
Last year I leaped on board with a B77 with much help from this site (and it was no contest head to head with my CR7E & B215S cassette decks) and I went on to find a mint Studer A807 mkI, which was an e(yyye)ar opener.
My advise: first off; spend the dosh and get your B77 fully serviced (and significantly, set-up to a specific tape formulation by an expert) - I'm UK based and can recommend a competant engineer. FWIW, I've found that AGFA's are good warmish sounding (on the B77) reels,
If you want to make the jump from a 'chrome sound' to a fuller range 'metal sound', get your deck set-up for Ampex 456 or Zonal 675 and you'll gasp on just 7 1/2 ips... IMHO, R2R is the ultimate expression of analogue sound - and not vinyl - but I could be a little biased :-)
As always, other posters may offer their differing experiences here.
Enjoy the journey...
