Hi, Tantra:Once you get used to the controls, it really is quite a snap to operate.
Yes, there is a little bit of a steep learning curve, but if you bother to read the manual (available online at the Alesis site), you will get a better perspective on how it operates. I invite you to examine it over there.
Performing basic edits is easily done. Adding fades is simple.
The use of the various equalization adjustments is where you have to be careful, but you can always change something prior to RENDERING the file. Once it is rendered, unless you have made a backup of some sort, it has been RENDERED and cannot be changed. Of course, you COULD burn a cdr and reload that disc back into another available play list and re-work the eq from there or even adjust the levels, add limiting, compression, etc, to your heart's content.
It's really quite a nice tool. Now, we must wait for Alesis to offer up a DVD recording device which is also similarly self-contained and has these and more features. I really don't see why they cannot compete with Tascam in that regard.
The only thing that I found lacking and an option which would have really put the 'icing on their cake', would have been the inclusion of some sort of reverb/delay effect, for which Alesis is already famous.
They told me that it would have made the unit too costly to produce or at least would have resulted in such an utterly expensive recorder that folks would have bailed on it. Don't forget that Alesis was in receivership for a while. We're glad that they are back!
Incidentally, if you were to open up an ML-9600, there is a lot of open space in there. In fact, there is probably enough room to put at last another hard-drive and CD/RW drive inside with room to spare!
I'm not exaggerating, either!
