Philip and DuPont invent the pure CrO2 and later sold the right to BASF and BASF refuses to license the technology to the Japanese companies. The Japanese companies then came out with those COBALT type material to create a TYPE-II tape which suppose to closely match those CrO2 from BASF. Maybe the TDK TYPE-II is the one that has the best match to the CrO2 from BASF. I am not sure whether that is the reason that most Japanese companies Type-II don't have the name CrO2 on their tapes ( mostly TYPE-II, high bias, 70us Eq. ). Most Pre-recorded commerical cassette tapes have CrO2 on their labels because the raw tapes are supplied by BASF.
