I just aquired the same unit the other day.(No charge)It needed a tune up but runs like a top now.You did not damage anything.There is a
small lever in the tape path that measures tape tension.When there is
no tension the lever rises and trips the all auto stop mechanism.
No harm done at all.Where are you finding new blank tapes.I would
like to find some maxells if possible.My sony had a slow running problem.It turned out to be the capacitor on the main motor.The unit
would keep speed for about 45 minutes and then slow to a stop.
