I first started modifying on my Nak CR-2A. I had the rca jacks (& wires to main board) replaced & it was a clear improvement. People now thought that I was playing cds!My suggestions are take a good look at the tape deck. What are the jacks like? Is it possible to replace the wire from the RCAs to the main board? If so, then get something like Kimber Kable (a couple feet will set you back only $10 or less). Then replace the power cable with something that is well shielded. These changes are relatively simple & will give a boast in sound quality.
Of course the other suggestions are good, but use your judgement as to where to spend the money. I tend to keep mods in line with the price of the orginial product. No point dropping $300 in a $100 tape deck! A couple of hundred in a $800 Teac is a different story of course.
