If you can find tapes that were made before Dolby i.e1967, then yes they are better than CDs. But you are fighting other issues also; ie, the tape must be in very good condition and many used tapes have wear or breaks or were stored improperly and the mag oxide is falling off or shedding. Also the dry lubricant on the tape may have migrated to one side causing the tape to squeal as it passes fixed guides and heads. The period from about 1957 to 1967 is especially good if the tape is 2 track or 4 track and recorded at 7.5ips. The advent of Dolby noise reduction caused the companies to introduce 3.750 ips and I wouldn't touch one of them with a 12 foot mic boom. Good luck! Ray
