RE: Sony TC-458

After about 16 hours work this thing is much improved. What is surprising is how good it sounds. I would not have been shokced if the audio electronics had an issue (like 3 of my 4 Pioneer decks did).

But no, once I did the work on the mechanical tape movement functions (some disaasembly, lots of cleaning and lubing), the sound is quite lovely playing back a dub from an MFSL Beatles LP. And the VU meters work perfectly!

These Sony units are notorious for having much of the moving mechanical parts frozen due to the grease that was used turning into toffee. That was the case with this unit for sure. And the operators manual recommends re-lube every 6 months.

I washed away the old, glue-like grease using DeOxit Fader and used tri-flow penetrating synthetic+teflon liquid lube. Eventually I may re-lube with grease but if I re-lube every 6 months or so with the tri-flow liquid, it should be fine. Even the tape counter is now working. I hesitate to use grease again anyway that will turn into glue.

Just one more issue. I need to replace the main motor start/run caps. There are two packed in a dual can - 1.5uf + 0.5uf, both 250v.

I have a single, new replacement for the 1.5uf although it is square shape so not going into the can. And the 0.5uf is not used for U.S. players with 120v line voltage anyway.

All in all,I feel lucky to have a great sounding unit for $350 total investment in unit + parts (four belts and 1 new cap so far) - including my time which is worthless anyway since Covid ;)
