I was told all functions worked - except the tape counter - at the time it was boxed up. But I forgot to ask how long ago that it was boxed. :)
No tape movement in PLAY in either direction. FF and Rewind go if they get a little starting push.
I am hoping that the problems are all mechanical and it is just dissasemble, clean and lube. From what I have read that is the most common problem with these decks. The pinch rollers did not roll easily, got that cleaned up. I have all new belts so they will be changed.
This is a weird model in that the head assembly rotates 180 degrees when tape play or record direction changes, so that it will play and record in both directions with only 3 heads (!)
And the owner's manual does say lube every 6 months.
So we'll see..
P.S. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE CAPSTAN SHAFTS ON THIS DECK ARE MOTOR DRIVEN? WHEN POWERED UP THEY DON'T SEEM TO TURN, MAYBE THEY ARE SIMPLY FRICTION ROLLING WITH THE PINCH ROLLERS?EDIT: Reading the user manual more carefully: The servo controlled AC capstan motor maintains speed variation to a minimum, even during large discrepancies in live voltage, load and frequency.
