Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

They are not hard to ship but

I have access to proper packing materials. An audio buddy used to work at a camera supply distributor and got me double wall boxes and polyethylene foam in various shapes and sizes.

On the 909 I shipped,
remove the feet,
protect the back of the unit with something on the bottom of the box
let the faceplate edges hold some weight, done with side fill pieces that the faceplate will rest on as the tape deck is placed in the box face up.
Fill the edges with the accessories
Cover the faceplate with proper packing material and make sure the head block and especially the reel spindles cannot be pressured when the box is closed.
Finish packing the deck tight in the box.

Put that box into another box which is the right size to hold it tight if you have properly protected the deck in the first box or with a box a bit bigger to allow another layer of packing material, styrofoam sheets or polyethylene sheets.

Nothing can move at all in either box build. Verify the deck does not move when you finish the first box before the second boxing.

Some would wrap the machine in plastic sheet material used to hold a pallet of boxes together. I might do that with the 707 as it is lighter. It would need a good few inches all the way around before being packed safely into the first box.

Packing gear for trip survival isn't too hard if you know the rules
the item cannot move in its shipping box.
you can't use any packing materials that compress without returning to original shape or that pop and release air, becoming smaller as the unit travels.
Protect corners with distance or corner braces or both.
Pack for the possible drop of a few feet onto a hard surface
