"Re-lapping" heads is kind of poorly understood - it makes the heads smoother but it does NOT in any way, shape for form reduce the wear. In fact relapping heads actually very slightly reduces the life left. Unless the heads need to be moved around for alignment reasons to the point where the wear pattern would damage tapes because they would no longer be running in the existing wear groove, there isn't any reason to relap them.
