from the photo, it looks like the playback heads are ready to be re-lapped. Servicing this unit is quite expensive especially the recapping and re-lapping works. BTW, the S/N ratio specs of this unit are not great although competitive with other machines in the same price category.

I had this machine including their top of the line Pioneer CT-F1250 cassette deck back in the 80's. It made great cassette copies but the sound leaves nothing to be desired, compared to my other cassette deck which was the lowly AKAI model. However, I do love the design and their ergonomics of which made me buy them in the first place.
