The answer about sound quality is ... it depends. Not much help. Your Sinatra example reminded me that I bought a R-R tape of the album that Sinatra did with Duke Ellington -- "Francis A. & Edward K." -- because I already had the wonderful-sounding LP and wondered if the tape was even better. It really sucked, unfortunately, and I saw the tell-tale reason on the tape box: "Manufactured and Distributed by STEREOTAPE, Costa Mesa, Calif." I have NEVER found a tape these people produced that sounded good.On the other hand, Sinatra's "Watertown" (manufactured by Bell & Howell) is a good-sounding tape. I don't have the LP so I can't compare.
In general, buying tapes on Ebay is a total crapshoot. Too many factors at work. But it's really the only show in town, and some of the ones I've bought there were simply fantastic.
