The squealing can be caused by a tape that no longer has its lubricant and/or is shedding and building up oxide on the heads and guides etc. It can get so bad it will stop during play but usually not in rewind or FF. Try cleaning everything the tape touchs, heads, guides, pinch roller etc and then try a DIFFERENT tape. If it plays ok with another tape then the first tape is toast...
