the capstan motor is not switched by the pinch roller. the capstan turns whenever an a77 is powered up. The service manual and owners manual are available in PDF on revox's website but i dont think you can get to it without a direct link. if i remember i will post the link here when i'm on my computer where i have the link.the board that controls the motor speed has a component or two that typically go bad. there is a "yahoo group" reel to reel forum that has the info.
try to turn the capstan by hand. if it turns easily you can rule out sticky lube.
