Re: help on buying good deck

Hi there.

If it's cheap, I'd go for it. Probably a pretty good deck, though I'm not real familiar with Vector Research stuff.

Nearly any 3-head deck is bound to be pretty good. Those are the models that were the flagships of their respective lines. I've heard Sansui decks were uneven in quality so I'd probably steer clear of those. Also, stay away from Fisher decks. In my experience, they suck badly.

My personal non-Nak faves are:

TASCAM 122 - Super reliable pro workhorses that sound great. This is probably my all-around favorite. The TEAC C-1, C-2, & C-3 are all early variations of the TASCAM 122, by the way. Can be pricey, though.

Onkyo Integra 3-head decks - Feature laden and very good quality, these offer great bang for your buck on the used market.

Akai, Harman/Kardon & Sony ES - The older ones are great decks with solid build quality. The newer ones are less heavily built, but still pretty good.

JVC (Victor), Toshiba, & Hitachi - Not as popular as some of the others, but as good and can usually be had cheap on the used market.

I've never had a Denon tape deck, but of the Denon components I have owned, there have been reliability problems, so I steer clear.

The NAD decks are reportedly good too.

Cheers & good luck!
Bobbo :-)
