Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

Holy. Sh**. I've just realized I'd never had a decent cassette deck..

..until now.

I'm using a NAD 6050c, which hasn't even been gone thru yet other than having cleaned the head, AND has some minor transport issues (belt stuff.. takes some fidgeting to get it going, and it'll get stuck from time to time as the transport is -I'm told- 'motor assisted') .. but gawd, the QUALITY!!

I picked up a fresh chrome tape yesterday, whatever I could find .. nothing fancy. Cracked it open today, popped it in, grabbed a cheap Discman as a source (Van Morrison's "Moondance" in it) set levels with the just highest peaks hitting "+4" and rolled tape.

I came back when the side was over, rewound it, and played it right back.

WOW. WOW.

It sounds unbelievable. I could actually hear the background hiss of the CD on the fade-outs!! Dynamic, crisp, open, no loss whatsoever of separation, nice warm bass, everything.

I'm still stupefied. I'd basically forgotten about cassettes, and recently picked this deck up on advice from someone else, thought it'd be a nice chance to transfer a bunch of old rehearsals and band stuff from almost 10 years back to CD .. I certainly didn't expect this!!

And this was from a deck that needs a tune-up, and I still haven't learned to work the fine bias knob either .. I just leave it at 12 o'clock ("0").

I just thought I'd post .. there's no real point to this but I'd love to read anything anyone might want to write. Especially about NAD decks, .. even if it's bad

Whatever .. thanks for reading this, if you've got this far! ;-)
