Hi Damian,Reading your ode to the NAD 6050C really made me smile (no, you won't hear anything negative from me re NAD machines)!! But the funny thing is my brother has one of these units which he got new in 1983 or 84 and it still sounds excellent - as it should, with proper care and cleaning. I mention cleaning, because it has of cause a "nude" transport, although there is the plastic head guard to slip over when not in use.
By the way, you were really pushing the levels on that chrome - was it a Maxell XLII or TDK SA? Or something else. I'm very impressed that the deck held together the van Morrison without some even-order distortion.
But no matter - you know - like wine, good sound is the sound you like. I'm a tape addict (but have all formats on hand, excluding 8-track, Sony Elcasset and wax cylinder!!) and I still thoroughly enjoy... no, prefer the humble compact cassette.
I unfortunately don't have a NAD, but do have another Brit deck - a Rotel RC-960BX - a machine with a similarly crisp and articulate sound. (Not to mention, also typically understated looks).
Words like WOW and stupified say it all!! Enjoy your return to real analogue recording - it's the place to be.
Best wishes - Marc
