Right: It could get kinda messy. Looks like the record amp is designed to work with line levels (+4dbm) and I'm not familiar with that tube which is unlegible on my computer (6AW8A). The play preamp stands the best chance of being converted but would take some revision. The first 12ax7 has it's cathode grounded which means they are pushing the gangbusters out of a 12ax7 to get maximum gain. There is no feedback around the first 12ax7 which is a good thing within certain limits. Id put a cathode resistor, first stage instead of grounding it. Following the first two stages of 12ax7s is considerable NAB playback equalization that looks passive and must be bypassed for flat response. The 6dj8 stages are a line out amp that is transformer coupled, with a volume control in between; very good! It would cease to be a NAB tape playback preamp. I hate to take a hatchet to any piece of equipment or modify it. Better mic preamps can be had, but it wouldn't be a major undertaking. You'd probably want to buy mic input trannys. Ray
