The Ampex PR-10 is tubed.Here are some schematics:

record - http://recordist.com/ampex/schematics/pr10man/pr10rec.gifI see what you mean about mic preamp plugin modules. Mine has a pair of 10k:10k input transfomrers in it, and I think those plug into the octal sockets where the mic preamp modules would have gone.
I'm starting to think maybe I should start from scratch. This thing looks like it is much happier controlling a tape machine than being a preamp.
