A machine labeled 2 track 7.5 ips/15 ips typically implies that it has at least a 1/2 track, i.e. 2 track, record head and playback head. It might also have a quarter track playback head, depending on the tape machine. This is fairly rare and aside from the RS1500 and MX5050 I don't know what other machines might have both 1/2 track and 1/4 track playback heads. And yes, you can look at the heads and tell, if you understand the positions of the tracks on the heads. A quarter track head will have two relatively narrow tracks that are offset, sort of one at the edge and one sort of more towards the middle. A half track head has two larger tracks, symmetrically located on ether side of the center.Here's a link that shows how the tracks are laid on tape by various head formats.
