Hiya mate,

That is if you buy this reel to reel! only kidding but I do happen to own one of these amazing machines. But seriously if you can get this machine for less than £600 sterling you would be doing yourself a favour. The track system on the TD20Ase (second edition) although I think the second edition was the one with the dark facier top and bottom as apposed to the TD20A which has a black top and silver control pannel. is Half Track and this is how it works.
The recording will be either stereo full track by recording with both channels using the control pannel switches, or Mono if you only select one channel. You can only tape stereo in one direction as this uses the full width of the tape, so if you flipped the spools over the recording will sound in reverse and if you did tape over it you would loose all your recording.
You can record mono in both directions by using only one channel selected and flipping the tape at the end.
The TD20Ase is a professional machine and the quality is second to none. Side by side with a revox b77 mk 11 you should find you get better quality recordings with the Tandberg. and when set up properly you can hammer away at the control panel transport buttons to your hearts content and never get a tape snag! although having said that the one thing that is a bit of a gimick is the reel size button which is always off set to the larger reel size as the smaller one tends to make the tape tension more than it should be and the machine operates a bit on the savage side so I always leave my button set to the larger reel size and it works fine with both size reels!
You probably can't tell by looking at the heads what tracks it has because they are so small. and even if you could see the tracks you couldn't be sure if it were 2 or 4 tracks because both have 2 channels and therefore you would still see 2 gaps for the tracks on either except where you have a 4 channel machine that is able to record individual tracks such as a quality teac machine. But the fact the sticker says 2 track 7/12 15ips means that the Tandberg you are likely to purchase is the studio model and and should record flawlessly. With a quality tape like a quantegy your recorordings should fill your ears with depth and clarity and there shouldn't be anything to dissapoint you. Just don't get tempted to do any splicing on the deck itself if you do any editing work do it away from the deck as it would be a crime to spoil the facia alone. The heads on these decks seem indistructable by the way my recorder has been used for years, I have owned it since purchasing brand new in 1978 and used it every single day for about 10 years then was put into storage for approx 5 years and now I use about 20 hours per week and there is no sign of head wear whatsoever. the drive belt is still in good shape as is the pinchwheel. The first year I had it I didn't even change the tape just kept re-recording time and time again literally hundreds of times and even when I did purchase my second tape I wondered if it were worth it! A top class piece of hardware and good luck with your new experience.
