Make sure the deck is clean (guides, heads, capstan, pinch roller) and demagnetized and up to service as far as tape tension. Always use the same size take up reel including the larger hub reels used on pre-recorded tapes. They must be balanced. Never rewind or fast forward an old questionable tape, only run in PLAY speed or 2x play speed. Store the tape wound neatly stack or layer upon layer not scrambled wound as in fast forward or rewing. That means if the tape is recorded in one direction you need to play the tape in reverse (flip it and run it through again even if it sounds backwards) to get it neatly stacked on the real before storing it. The stack of tape will have a nice sheen and be smooth on both sides of the stack (that is if your guides are properly aligned). Always use a healthy length of leader/timing tape to thread the machine with. Always repair breaks before doing a dub and inspect areas of the tape where oxide has fallen off or sticks to the next layer. Good luck! Ray Hughes
