Hello:The tape you have may be unique, but if your Father actually recorded Mr. King in 1962 and this is the only known recording of that particular event, you surely need to take every precaution possible to ensure its preservation for the future.
My experience is that tapes properly stored which date from 1962 probably will play without incident. The tapes which were manufactured during the eighties became quite problematic, mostly due to their binder bases absorbing moisture, causing all sorts of disasters when played without first being archively "baked".
I highly recommend some consultation with someone familiar with professional archival techniques in this regard.
If the speech can be accurately dated to a particular place and time, it is possible that another copy might exist, or that the speech might have been broadcast, hence the possibility of someone else recording it.
Have you researched this possibility?
This is an interesting topic and one which obviously demands the right procedure, so I want to wish you the best of luck in that regard.
