Don't mean to stir up a hornet's nest, but years ago a friend was to ship me a heavy amp/preamp combo that was bolted together (by design). I told him to unbolt the units and pack separately.
He didn't, and packed poorly, and the set was trashed.
Local UPS guy looked at the obviously poor packing, said the packing was lousy, and still authorized payment for full (used) value. Oddly enough the pieces still worked, though looked like hell.
In my current job we ship are receive very expensive delicate industrial electronics. almost all through UPS. Never have a problem.
Lastly, when I ship stuff I sell (including Mac amp and pre, and some good tube stuff, I always use FedEx ground. Cheaper, more convenient for me and have NEVER had a problem,
