Oldest trick in the book! Let me pay you by signing this $5000 check over to you and you just pay me the difference of $1500.$5000 check bounces and the scammer walks off with $1500. Been around in one form or another way before the internet ever existed.
Anything even closely resembling this should get your little red lights blinking. Audio gear purchases should be very straight forward - if they are not, then they should avoided.
