It's years since I used a 300b, too coloured as you say. I used 2a3s instead for a while and for me it's a better sounding valve. But only 15W dissipation, while 300b is (safely) 25W.
But 2a3 means a high gain input tube so same old problem. The E12n has a dissipation of 18W and a 26 drives it beautifully. I'm happy - no pesky 9 pin tubes in sight.
