Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Re: John, you were sucker-punched, then piled on, by the Usual Suspects.

It is a given, in any audio testing, that we use clean, similar contacts.

There's more than just the connector-to-connector contact involved. There's also the wire-to-connector contacts to be considered as well.

One problem that I did have was trying to use a mumetal shield, that actually contributed some distortion, so I removed it.

Have you measured and compared the Radio Shack cables both with and without the steel spring strain reliefs? Steel is magnetic as well and has a larger hysteresis loop than MuMetal which should result in greater non-linearity (i.e. distortion) than MuMetal.

Also, what have you done to account for the nickel barrier plating used on most gold plated connectors? Nickel is ferromagnetic as well and will also exhibit distortion due to hysteresis. And while the barrier plating is rather thin, it's enough that my neodymium iron born magnets will stick to such connectors with enough strength to support the weight of all four of them.

Hmmmm. Here's an interesting observation. I was just trying the magnets out on some 2" 6-32 stainless steel socket head cap screws I have here. There's about a 7/8" section between the head and the threads that's just a straight smooth rod. The magnets will not stick to that section, but will readily stick to both the head and the threaded section.

Odd.

This hasn't anything to do with the current topic. Just happened to notice it while I was writing this and thought it worth mentioning.
