Thanks for posting a stimulating idea. Steve Eddy has already observed that most speakers are slightly underdamped with voltage-source (ie, high damping factor) amplifiers, and this might be why the designers tend in that direction. This might also help explain why so many prefer ribbon or panel dipoles, where the driving and damping forces are distributed over nearly all of the moving element.It seems the better approach would be to minimize the diaphragm breakup tendency within the pass band through diaphragm architecture rather than compensate for it through underdamping.
