Re: Interesting?

One major reference paper of comparing the the difference in phase (polarity) sensitivitity between headphones and loudspeakers was presented at the 1973 Rotterdam AES conference. It is called 'Threshold of Phase Detection by Hearing' by Madson and Hansen.
p 27 'Greater Sensitivity for Phase Distortion in Reverberant Environments'
"A comparison between permissible phase shifts for headphone and for loudspeaker (in semi-reverberant rooms) tests shows noticeably greater phase sensitivity in the reverberant room.
In order to explain this, the following hypothesis is advanced: In the reverberant room, a great many reflections occur although they are of much lower amplitude than the direct signal. The fact that such reflections occur will cause the listener to receive a large amount of additional information of the same nature as the direct signal, probably resulting in increased sensitivity.
Another explanation can be given by realizing that phase shift in a reverberant room with standing waves can be converted into amplitude shift which and probably more detectable"
Well, how about that folks ?
