My own EPOS ES11 speakers are "rated" at 87dB efficiency yet when tested by AUDIO magazine were found to be 85.5dB efficiency. Since I use them with a high pass filter to keep bass below 70Hz. away, even that number is no longer accurate.
Peak power requirements may be very brief -- that's why it's so easy to overlook amp clipping.
The amplifier "headroom" measurement uses a brief tone burst, either 20 milliseconds or 200 milliseconds == faster than a Rat Shack meter.
