As a longtime optical engineer and researcher (since you mentioned "observations"), I can tell you that in the science of optics "observations" play a crucial role, even though at first they may be "casual". (I notice you use that word pejoratively.) Without them in fact we'd get nowhere!After all, if we were blind we wouldn't be optical engineers; why then do the deaf become audio engineers? ("There is none so deaf as he who will not listen.")
