This explains a common misconception held by

those that bash line conditioners and aftermarket power cords based upon the "miles of wire" to you house arguement, namely that electrical activity within a house itself is the source of some of the worst power line pollution ... motors/fans/heaters/light fixtures etc. Even if you don't wish to entertain the power cord issue it's clear that a line conditioner feeding audio/video components has an obvious application... the design of such should also ensure that pollution generated by the components themselves is dealt with.

It's even worst in a large building of course. The linked post contains reference to some white papers from Powervar that touch on the topic ... I think they have reworked the site but I believe the directions in the post should still be helpful in locating.
