A funny story about noisy caps...

Jack Elliano, maker of transformers under the Electraprint name, also makes the cores for the Jupiter waxed paper capacitors. The claim is that these do not generate sound, whereas capacitors made from synthetic dielectrics do.

A few years ago, at a meeting of the Bay Area Audio club, he demonstrated the superiority of the Jupiter caps. He had a signal generator and connected a number of typical synthetic caps to it. He held the cap up to the microphone and twiddled the knob on the generator, so that we all could hear the sound from the cap.

His grand finale was to do this with one of his Jupiter caps. Of course, the microphone was picking up the electrical signal as well as the sound, so the Jupiter cap squealed just as much over the PA system.

"Oh S***!"
