"My question is, why not make such long-lasting light bulbs today??"I think the answer is that light bulbs today are engineered for high light output efficiency with sacrifice for ultimate longevity. Tungsten is really tough, but to get a bright, nearly white light, then it has to be run with a big current density that limits lifespan.
