Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Cool!

Yea I tire of getting bundled in with those who think expensive audio is nothing but status or jewelry.

Quite the contrary I believe the best sound quality available is going to come for equipment priced well above moderate price point. The distinction I attempt to make is that just spending money on expensive equipment doesn't guarantee even good sound. I know this is a fact because I've heard far more bad sounding expensive systems than I've heard great sounding expensive systems.

But even more to the point. I've heard expensive audio systems sound bad in dealer showrooms for years - yet these same dealers sell enough equipment out of these showrooms to keep themselves in business and to continue to carry these lines. How does this happen? Who's buying this equipment? Clearly it's not those who are taking even a casual listen to other equipment priced far less - and if they are doing so they must be far more influenced by the reputation of the manufacturers than they are by the sound of the systems they are purchasing. It may also be that people don't know what sounds good and they are allowing themselves to be "taught" what a good system is supposed to sound like.

Sure payment for an audiophile for being a wise consumer is getting a great sounding audio system. Simply paying great sums of money for an audio system will bring great status and pride of ownership rewards but this is no guarantee one is even getting a good sounding stereo system.

This isn't even just a problem with the most expensive equipment, owners of modestly priced high end equipment fall into the same kind of traps just like owners of very inexpensive systems.

Again I'm only really interested in these kinds of issues because I think what most of us consider audiophile resources should be illuminating these kinds of issues but instead it appears that they are far more likely to exploit them.

Give me rhythm or give me death!
