Yes, this is oversampling.... the main purpose of oversampling was to relax the analog filter requirement by moving to a higher sample rate and using sharp digital filter where you used to use a sharp analog filter. Now your analog filter need only look ideal to 1/4 Fs (if you 4X oversample as an example) and no longer needs to be sharp since there is nothing to filter any more anywhere near the cutoff.The whole point of THIS exercise is _can you build a better digital filter_ than what is in an oversampling (or upsampling) DAC by not doing it real-time and using more data? I say you can. Now the digital filter in the oversampling DAC need only look ideal to 1/4 Fs. In essence you are relegating the digital filter in the DAC to the same fate the analog filter was given by introducing the original digital filter in the first place.
