More questions : niobium

145.64.134.243

I looked at quantum material patents in our fulltext database and found 10 where Nb is mentioned : it's NOT used for sandwiching a quantum device, here's a few examples:

"An electrode wiring consisting of a conductor A2 made up of a metallic film composed of gold, aluminum, niobium, etc., is formed onto the surface of an insulating substrate 1 consisting of glass, and an insulating film 3 composed of SiO2, Al2O3, NbO or the like is shaped onto the electrode wiring. "

"A niobium or niobium compound layer 24 to become a base electrode and an insulating layer 26 are formed on a substrate 20 by lamination"

"successive forming a niobium nitride film (24) and a silicon nitride film (26) on a substrate (20); oblique etching of the niobium nitride film (24) and said silicon nitride film (26) with respect to the substrate (20)

The technical field seems to be "superconducting quantum interference devices (DC-SQUID)".

I think that Geoff will have a hard time putting together a sound explanation which will not raise more questions than it answers.
