I have Beyer 250s, AKG 241s, and Shure E3s..I make my living as a sound engineer, I trust my ears.
For best reproduction, the E3s are the most accurate across all frequencies. The Beyers are a close second, and I would certainly choose them if you are uncomfortable with "in-ears".
I've heard good things about the E5s, and I would expect much higher quality for the price difference.
