In most audio cases, it gives a numerary reference to how much sound is directed along the axis of the speaker. As lower frequencies are reproduced by a speaker, they get less directional. Higher frequencies are much more directional, thus a "sweet spot" between both horns of a speaker system.
The wiring of the speakers has nothing to do with their directionality. It does however impact the amount of energy they can transduce.
