While current units are appearently an "effects" device, I seem to recall that when they first appeared mid to late 70's they were an attempt to restore bass material filtered out in the LP production process. The idea was that a 60Hz signal was assumed to be the second harmonic of a 30Hz fundamental so the 30 Hz fundamenral was sythesized. I recall some reviews were guardedly favorable. Until Telac and some direct-to-disc produces startede making LPs, ther typical commercial LP was limited below about 60Hz. Not too many turntable/cartridge combinations could deal with deep load base so selling LPs with such content might have just lead to complaints.
