Re: active and passive guitars?

I used to have an "active" Charvel with DiMarzio pickups. Great guitar with HUGE sustain. Unfortunately, the thing ate 9v batteries like candy. So in the middle of a gig when the battery suddenly dies, there goes your solo. I sold it for that reason. But it did play and sound really really good.

I also have a couple of Fender Strats (a USA model & an early Japanese model) a Gibson Les Paul, and a modded 1976 Gibson Marauder. The Gibsons come close to the amount of sustain of the active Charvel. The active guitars typically give you that "Van Halenesque" monster sustain. That's really about the only function of the electronics. And you can feel free to wail away with any amp you like. Just remember to change those batteries frequently if you gig with it.
