Anyone got advice on mixing low end?

Hi! I was wondering if anybody has advice for me for mixing in the low frequencies? I want to make the low end of my tracks tight and fat. Some tracks I've done in the past have been accused of being 'woofy' which I'm not sure I fully understand the meaning of. I think they were a bit un-tamed... Too much low-low bass maybe? I've tried to be much more careful with mixing any bass now, but I'd like to do better.

I currently am fond of using the Waves Maxxbass plugin on certain parts, but now a friend of mine tells me that spells trouble for people with subwoofers. Has anybody got any experience with this?

The other issue I am having is trying to get separation between kicks and basslines. I don't like to pitch either of them too high but if they sit in the same frequencies they become less distinguishable. If I pitch one up it gets kind of anemic and un-fat in my opinion. Anybody have suggestions for this?
