Microphone suggestions wanted

24.165.117.127

I'm looking for a quiet, neutral sounding side address condenser, cardiod or switchable. I need it to round out my collection most of which has some high end rise, or noise. Good rejection will be important because my room is imperfect. I don't need a tube mic, and I don't want to pay over $600 - less is better - and its got to be in current production because I don't trust second hand mics unless I hear them. Violins are a challenge at the moment. There's so much hype around at the moment I was just looking for some real experience. I want smoooooth and sweet.

I've been toying with ribbon mics - but I don't see them in use very often. I have the preamps to support low output mics and an excellent tube pre (pendulum) to get tubiness when required.

I used a Studio projects mic at another studio last month and I was surprised by how good it was for the price. The engineer was impressed too - but so many of the cheap condensers have little issues (noise, won't take spl, inconsistant production) - I'm reticent. I just need a "go to" mic for those situations where neutral is required. I was looking at ADK at Namm - but its so hard to tell anything on the show floor. Thoughts welcome. Thanks. Ted.
